Reliable Optical Communication for Smart Metering

The current AMI systems demand consistent and precise data capture on meter level. Reading the meters manually was time consuming and subject to error.

The optical probes made by Tespro such as the TP-BT and USB enabled optical ports to retrieve the data automatically, and supported different meter brands and protocols. USB and Bluetooth models were flexible both in the field and desktop.

Case

Product Case

One of the regional utility companies in North America was faced with a serious challenge of handling energy data within its service area: its web of electricity and thermal meters was spread over residential areas, commercial buildings, and industrial districts, and with different hardware specifications.

The current optical probes could not integrate smoothly with the central data platform of the company, which was based on the RS485, so there was a time-consuming manual process for each type of meter to be reconfigured, and the results of the processes were disjointed and delayed data collection, which adversely affected load balancing and the accuracy of billing.

The team required a solution that would be able to capture data in a variety of locations but should also fit well with their already installed backend system.

The TP-485 Series Optical Probe by Tespro had a purpose designed design to overcome these fundamental issues. Its native RS485 allowed a direct, stable connection with the central platform of the utility and it negated massive converters or protocol modification, which had, to date, led to gaps in the data.

The possibility of tailored aviation plugs provided a flawless fit with the mixed company fleet of meters and solved the compatibility problems, which had contrived cross-region data gathering.

The practical capabilities of the probe in addition to the seamless integration facilitated field operations. The magnetic adhesion is strong such that the device could be easily and securely attached on any meter without any tools, which is essential in maneuvering within narrow strips in utility closets or in the external meter boxes of various settings.

Adjustable cable length to suit different installation distances to minimize the installation of additional wiring or even modifications on-site. Its robust ABS+PC housing and 54 IP rating was to guarantee a stable performance in an indoor and the outdoor environment, in both the busy urban commercial district and a suburban home environment.
