Reliable Optical Communication for Smart Metering
In the modern AMI systems, there is a need to have a stable and precise data capture at the meter level. Reading of meters was slow and inaccurate.
The optical probes available at Tespro such as the TP-BT and USB series allowed the automatic retrieval of the data through the optical ports, supporting other brands of meters and protocols. There were also Bluetooth and USB models, which were flexible and used both in the field and desktop.
Case
Product Case
One large African energy utility was experiencing difficulties in integrating data collection a mix of tablets, PDAs and laptops was used among field teams, and old-fashioned meters did not benefit from an integrated connection. In the quest to find an all-purpose product to simplify electricity and thermal meter data collection, the company resorted to Tespro TP-PDA series optical probes.
The TP-PDA is highly versatile, with RS232/USB/ Type-C interfaces and terminal flexibility it is guaranteed that the device integrates easily with the existing hardware infrastructure deployed by the client. Its magnetic attaching system is an innovation that can be installed on meters without the use of tools and very quickly, which requires a complicated arrangement.
The device is truly plug-and-play coupled with a 2-meter standard cable to allow to maneuver the equipment on-site. Having data transmission speeds of 115200bps, the technicians are able to make correct readings in the shortest time possible and this simplifies the whole process and does not create any technical obstacle.
The utility installed 500 TP-PDA probes in both the city and the country. They had problems with device compatibility before and the hardware overhauls were also expensive to pursue. This problem of compatibility was fully overcome with TP-PDA since it was compatible with all the available terminals without the need of buying expensive hardware upgrades.
Moreover, the simplicity and credibility of the TP-PDA solidified its position as an important part of the smart metering upgrade, hence overcoming the barriers of operations and expenses. This case and the TP-PDA series as a versatile, economical utility-wide solution, with a wide range of hardware configurations, supports the history of Tespro providing flexible energy data collection solutions.
